Taking Control of Your Life

Changes in organisations throughout the world seem to be occurring at the speed of light, and these changes have an impact on family life too. Although educational systems have a part to play, parents have always played a decisive role in helping their children to develop into successful citizens who are truthful and have a sense of duty and obligation to the family, to society and to humanity at large.

It is also becoming a truism that the world will need more self-directed and empowered leaders than ever before in the years to come. For grooming their children to become such men and women, parents must ensure an atmosphere of reverence, devotion, mutual service and co-operation and teach their children to make the proper decisions on their own. Not only must they empower their children rather than dominate them, but they must seek ways to model the desired behaviour themselves.

Children naturally love to learn and learn at home eagerly. Children learn the most and best in a loving, supporting, and approving environment. They learn through discovery and parental feedback on their accomplishments. Autonomous, self-directed adults - that is, those who possess the capability of existing independently and have an identity of their own - are expected to be in even greater demand in the future.

Self-regulating people can choose to depend on others for significant needs, although they do not have to. In many families, the relationship is one of choice rather than necessity. Each individual is committed to the individual growth and happiness of family members, while still being able to explore one another?s dreams, plans, experiences, thoughts, perceptions and emotions without censure.

From regression analysis, we have learned that autonomy, self-regulation, intimacy, willingness to change and commitment to others are all significant prerequisites for establishing and maintaining healthy and effective communication in the work environment. We also know that everyone requires a considerable amount of freedom to decide, act, experience, and reach a goal.

Empowering ourselves and our children is considered to be the most accepted way to enable them to achieve what they want in life, in both the way they want to achieve it and in a way that benefits society. To this end, parents have to create an empowering environment in the home and this can only happen when you empower yourself.
